What is ACQUEAU?
ACQUEAU is the first EUREKA Cluster dedicated to environmental and water related technologies.
It aims at promoting innovation and market driven solutions to develop new technologies in the water sector.
ACQUEAU is an initiative supported by more than 25 countries and 70+ companies across Europe.
The ultimate aim of a EUREKA Cluster is to facilitate the generation of market-driven, pan- European collaborative water research and technological development R&D projects for the benefit of the European industry.
The EUREKA ‘Label’ is awarded to project proposals with the potential of developing breakthrough innovations. It allows successful consortium companies to apply for national funding in support of the labelled project; the label is an assessment of quality, economic interest and viability of the projects.
Why do we need ACQUEAU?
Water is a vital resource, and the sector provides 600,000 direct jobs in the European market. HOWEVER:
- There is a global disparity between water end users in terms of effectiveness of supply, equal access, sustainability and efficiency in water use.
- This has far reaching implications for Society, Health, Technology, Industry, Agriculture, Economy and Environment.
- Although the water market is fragmented and diverse, collaborative innovation will strengthen the European water sector & its position on the global stage
ACQUEAU is a carefully constructed, collaborative and research-into-action initiative that aims to tackle the central issues affecting the European Water Sector today, and thus lessen the negative impact on the various aspects of society.

What is our vision?
ACQUEAU's vision is key to its operation as a non-profit organisation.
- It sees itself to be a key driver in enhancing the European water sector as a competitor in the global market.
- It envisages the active implementation of pan-European RTD&I projects to help improve the water sector and bring it together in a cohesive way.
- It envisages the creation and active investment in innovative technological and sustainable solutions for the challenges the water sector faces.
- It envisages being the important bridge between policy and industry - to help "make things happen".
- It enviages itself as a central body in helping to make national and regional funding accessible to those who wish to contribute.
What exactly do we do?
We put our vision into action by:
Carrying out calls on specific needs of the water industry - our BLUE BOOKS outline and details some of these needs. The calls:
- Facilitate more projects for applied research
- Encourage pan-European collaboration to strengthen European competitiveness
- Boost competitiveness and innovation through SMEs
Labelling projects based on these calls.
Supporting pre and post labelled projects to liase with and apply for national funding.

Through <a href="http://www.wsstp.com" target="_blank">the Water supply and sanitation Technology Platform (WssTP)</a> employing the principle of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM), a ‘water vision’ for Europe has been identified by utilising knowledge from stakeholders, innovators, researchers, etc, involved in the water industry.</p><p style="text-align: justify;">This vision, supported by a Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) outlines the future scenario for the water industry. By employing the SRA the water cycle has been further examined and a ‘technology roadmap’ has been produced which ‘leads the way’ so that all players ‘flow’ in the right direction.</p><p><br />
</p><h1><strong>What is the goal of ACQUEAU?</strong></h1><p style="text-align: justify;">In order to facilitate the innovation of products, processes and systems needed on this roadmap the ACQUEAU Cluster will initiate R&TD calls on a regular basis identifying key ‘technology needs’ that are identified on the roadmap. Successful projects resulting from these ACQUEAU R&D Project calls will strengthen the technological base of the European Water industry. This in time will enable the sector to become more efficient and effective in serving the citizens of Europe and more competitive in the global markets for water services and related technologies.</p><p> </p><h1><strong>Why do we need ACQUEAU?</strong></h1><p>ACQUEAU will complement other water programmes in the following ways:<br />
- More projects to fund applied research<br />
- Boost competitiveness & innovation through SMEs<br />
- Encourage trans-European collaboration to strengthen European competitiveness<br />
- Reach beyond EU, national and regional agendas<br />
